Meet Lani: A Senior OT Supporting Families Across Gympie and Cooloola Cove

For Lani, becoming an Occupational Therapist wasn’t a straight line—but it was the right one. Originally planning to become a registered nurse, her career took a meaningful turn while working in a nursing home. It was there that she encountered a diversional therapist and discovered a different kind of care—one that sparked curiosity and inspiration.

“I looked into other options and became aware of OT. People questioned my choice because it wasn’t as well-known as nursing, but I’m so glad I chose OT!” she reflects.

Today, Lani brings that same spark to her work as a Senior Occupational Therapist with Forbes Care, supporting individuals and families throughout Gympie and Cooloola Cove.

Lani thrives on variety. No two clients are the same, and that’s exactly what she loves about her role.

“I feel privileged to be included in people’s lives, to journey with them towards their desired goals. Each one has their very own unique story.”

Her areas of clinical interest include minor and major home modifications, daily living skills training, and assistive technology prescription—ensuring that each client’s environment and tools align with their goals and safety.

Balancing the Buckets

Lani’s sessions are often rich with hands-on demonstrations and visuals. She finds herself drawing frequently to explain concepts, and one of her favourite frameworks is deceptively simple but powerful: the “buckets” of self-care, productivity, and leisure.

“When we’re mindful about replenishing all three, our occupational engagement improves. It’s a great way to help manage fatigue, pain, and overall quality of life.”

A Calm, Client-Centred Presence

Known for her compassionate and attuned approach, Lani meets each client where they are—literally and emotionally.

“I’m always mindful that I’m in my client’s space. I take time to observe how they’re feeling, match that energy, and ensure they feel safe and seen. I share a bit about myself to break the ice and always ask if there’s anything I can do to make them more comfortable.”

It’s an approach that allows trust to grow naturally, setting the stage for meaningful, collaborative therapy.
